Pros and Cons of Working Multiple Jobs

Pros and Cons of Working Multiple Jobs

There are pros and cons of working multiple jobs. It can be great on your wallet but hard on your body. Most people do this because they have to not because they want to. I have been off and on working two jobs for the past four years. At times I feel like I’m rocking it out. Then there are times I feel like it’s time for a time out. Nevertheless, this is what it has taught me.

Pro. A pro to working more than one job is you have a backup job. If something were to happen to one job you could try to pick up extra hours at the other one. In 2014, my best friend at the time, and I were working a job that was going under. None of the employees knew a thing. The paychecks just stop coming in. My friend and I had just started working at a restaurant in front of the same plaza. So, we told one of the owners that we could no longer work our schedules if we were not going to get paid. The next day I asked for more hours at the restaurant. The hours were given to me and instead of having two part-time jobs I had one full time. Certainly better than what I was doing before.

Con. A con to working so much is you start to get a bit of FOMO. With such a full schedule, you start to fear missing out on having fun in your life. While your friends are living it up on Instagram, you are clocking out of one job and into the next. It’s even more difficult to work and have time for fun when you have to work both jobs in one day. You also have to get enough sleep, so you have the energy to go to both jobs. You don’t want to be so tired that you sleep through your alarm. I have done that before. It does not look good.

Pro. You can save a lot of money with more than one job. Not only will you have your bill money, but you can start to build a rainy-day fund. Life is full of unexpected expenses. You can only prepare so much. Having savings gives you a little bit more peace of mind, above all. The cushion of extra funds takes a lot of stress off your shoulders.

Con. Having more than one job can be very stressful. You start to feel as if you are only existing not living. I have been there. As a matter of fact, that might be my feelings toward the day tomorrow morning. However, there are ways to keep this from causing a nervous breakdown.

  • Availability. Set your availability so that you have some time off. Even if it is just one day. Having that time can be a lifesaver. It gives you a little bit of time to do the things you can’t normally do while you are at work. That one day that you set off will be sent from heaven.
  • Reminder. Remind yourself that this is not forever. Write it down and put it in a place you always look. You just have to keep the mindset that you are doing this to get ahead and that one day you will get to where you want to be. Probably a lot sooner than you think.

There are many pros and cons of working multiple jobs. On your sleepiest day remember that you are going to make it through this.  Do you have more than one job? Do you like it? What’s your thought process?
